How some therapy goals can be reached in one session

Many people imagine therapy as a process that takes years and involves digging through your past while reclining on an therapist's couch. With this image in mind, it is no wonder many people wait until problems are big and ugly before seeking the help of a professional Therapist ( or avoid seeking help altogether).

Single session therapy ( yes, you heard me right! therapy that happens in one session) can be very helpful when you just need a bit of help to get back on track or when life has thrown you some unexpected curve balls. In a single session approach, a Therapist and client work together to identify the most pressing problem and set a realistic goal to achieve by the end of the session. I have done a lot of single session therapy and I have seen so many people leave the session with a renewed sense of hope and confidence in their ability to change what has been troubling them.

What I have learned is that you make a difference in one session of therapy if both the therapist and the client set out to do so, that people are much more likely to take action when they identify their own goals, and that we don't need know volumes of information about the problem in order to find realistic solutions that make a difference.

Clients I have worked with have taught me that small changes can make a big difference, some problems only need a little bit of help, and helping someone to sort out a few steps along the way can help them travel the rest of the way with their own supports. Attending a single session doesn't mean you can't request more sessions if you think it would be helpful but it means it is not assumed that you will need multiple sessions.
